Many students think the hard part is getting the Commercial Pilot Licence. In reality the licence is where an airline pilot career begins. In the X Aviate podcast, Captain Dhanasekar talks about what the profession really asks of you: strict discipline, irregular schedules, personal sacrifices and continuous responsibility for safety. This article walks through the journey after the licence, step by step.
Behind the uniform
Travel and new destinations are the visible side of pilot life. Behind every flight is professionalism, adaptability and dedication that has to be shown every single day.
Step 1: CPL and frozen ATPL
After the CPL with instrument and multi-engine ratings, most airline aspirants also clear the ATPL theory examinations. This is the "frozen ATPL" stage: the theory is done, and the full licence is issued once the required flying experience is gained. See our ATPL ground classes.
Step 2: Airline selection
Airlines in India recruit through cadet programmes and direct hiring of licensed pilots. Selection typically includes written aptitude and technical tests, a simulator assessment, psychometric evaluation and interviews. Strong fundamentals from ground school make a visible difference here.
Step 3: Type rating
Every airliner type, such as the A320, B737 or ATR 72, needs its own type rating: ground school on the aircraft's systems, simulator sessions on normal and emergency procedures, and a skill test.
Step 4: Line training and first officer
After the type rating, the new first officer flies real passenger flights under a training captain until released to the line. From then on, a pilot is checked regularly in the simulator and on the line, and must keep a valid DGCA Class 1 medical.
Step 5: Command
With experience, the full ATPL and the airline's command upgrade training, a first officer becomes a captain, responsible for the aircraft, crew and passengers.
Staying ready for the whole career
A pilot's journey does not end after earning a licence. In this episode Captain Dhanasekar talks about continuous learning, physical fitness, mental focus and maintaining professional standards throughout a career. Behind every successful flight is a pilot who keeps learning, adapting and improving.
